1. Initial-term lease total
Initial lease payments = S₁ + S₂ + … + SₙEach S is an installment in the official payment schedule, including applicable lease tax. If—and only if—every installment is identical, the check is monthly lease including tax multiplied by the number of months. The calculator lets an official schedule total override that shortcut.
2. Early termination
Early termination fee = sum of unpaid initial-term installments + assessed damage feeApple’s early-return and early-upgrade guidance requires the initial lease obligation to be completed. We recommend entering the exact remaining total from Klarna because tax and adjusted trade-in credits can make installments unequal.
3. Purchase option
Pre-tax purchase option = signing list price − credited lease payments − down payment − remaining trade-in/discount creditsAmount due = pre-tax purchase option + applicable tax + assessed damage feeNew Apple Upgrade leases normally do not permit a voluntary down payment, so that term is zero in standard calculations. We keep the public formula explicit and use the final Klarna quote as authoritative.
4. Total outlay
Return-at-end total combines the initial payment schedule, any separate optional coverage, amounts due at signing and an entered damage assessment. Own-now total combines the user’s outlay to date with the purchase-option amount due. Cash comparison uses the same device configuration plus entered checkout tax.
Precision and validation
Every dollar value is converted to integer cents before arithmetic. This avoids JavaScript floating-point errors such as 0.1 + 0.2. Inputs reject negative values and more than two decimal places; terms are limited to the 12, 24 and 36 month structures Apple advertises.
What we deliberately do not calculate
- An MSRP-to-monthly-payment rate: Apple publishes no universal residual formula.
- ZIP-code lease tax: state and local treatment varies and no unified Apple Upgrade tax formula is published.
- Damage fees: only an actual assessment can establish the amount.
- Trade-in credit rounding: the payment schedule controls.
- Month-to-month extension payments: the initial credit may expire and no universal amount is published.
- Approval or credit outcomes: those belong to Klarna’s application process.
